Something Old into Something New: A Styled Shoot

May 2, 2010

Last month, I teamed up with Yelena Johnson of The Stylish Soiree to style and produce a shoot for Nonpareil Magazine, an online source of inspiration for brides. The theme of the issue was “Something Old Into Something New” and our goal was to come up with a look that featured vintage elements that are so popular these days, but with a modern twist. I have always been drawn to modern design, but I love the look and feel of contrasting vintage accents against that modern backdrop.

We had an incredible team of ladies that contributed to this shoot and it was incredible to see it all come together the day of the shoot. A true dream team of creative, talented, professional women.

Flowers and table arrangements: Krista Jon of Couture Designs – so delightful and super talented

Hair & Makeup: Fiore Beauty – always amazing and they all have such a great vibe

Vintage dresses: Shareen Vintage Los Angeles – amazing inventory of vintage clothing

Jewelry and gloves: Handmade by Yelena – super talented

Suit: Hugo Boss

And, of course, thanks to our awesome models Lenny and Emily! They were so great to work with- great energy and positive attitudes. :)

We started with some portraits at the LACMA Urban Light Sculpture. I love that place. This dress from Shareen Vintage was gorgeous- Yelena and I both fell in love immediately when we found it on the racks of their warehouse. And Lenny’s slate gray suit from Hugo Boss was the perfect complement.

A close up of the amazing makeup done by Fiore Beauty on the left. On the right: the black demi-gloves Emily is wearing were handcrafted by Yelena out of a pair of old black leather gloves. These were her vision to help modernize the very vintage, delicate dress. She trimmed them with a pale blue-lined brass zipper. Visit the feature in Nonpareil to learn more about how these were made. Love. this. look.

Krista’s asymmetrical bouquet was stunning! The colors went so perfectly with the dress and was the perfect mix of delicate and modern.

One of my favorites…

We created a second look as the reception look. A smaller bouquet alternative on the left. On the right: the amazing necklace made by Yelena out of old strands of pearls to go with the reception/party dress.

The amazing table details… I adored the mix of very modern, bold vessels with with the more classic, ornate accents.

I had such a great time on this shoot! Thanks again to everyone who helped- you are all amazing. :)

Palm Springs Wedding Photographer – Miramonte Resort: Auni & Greg

April 20, 2010

One week, I was shooting a wedding in a snow storm in Mammoth… the next week, a beautiful wedding in heat of the desert near Palm Springs. That’s what I love about my job- each and every wedding is so different! Most of the time, the differences are not as drastic as the differences in climate of my last two weddings, but they are all different and therefore I never get bored shooting them. In fact, I’m inspired in a brand new way each weekend.

Auni and Greg’s wedding took place at the lovely Miramonte Resort and Spa in Indian Wells, CA. It was a warm, gorgeous day in the desert- the perfect backdrop for Auni and Greg’s small destination wedding. These are some of my favorites that tell the story of the day. Thanks to my friend Amelia Strauss for helping me out once again!

I loved Auni’s shoes.

And she looked absolutely gorgeous.

Thanks to Amelia for getting these detail shots of the fun florals created by Artisan Event Florals.

The ceremony.

Portraits of the newlyweds.

The cutest flower girls…

Desert nights are my favorite.

The first dance.

This is Harlan. He’s pretty fly.

Auni and her cute little nephew on the dance floor.

These flower girls (you may remember them from this previous post) totally ruled the dance floor.

They brought the moves…

And yes, they even did the worm…. better than I’ve ever seen anyone do the worm.

Congratulations, Auni & Greg!

The Cutest Flower Girls Ever

These are, quite possibly, the cutest flower girls ever.

More from this Palm Desert wedding soon!

Happy Wednesday! :)

Mammoth Mountain Wedding Photos: Jannette & Scott

April 8, 2010

When Jannette and Scott hired me to shoot their Mammoth Mountain wedding, I was on cloud nine. A wedding. On the top of Mammoth Mountain?? Doesn’t that sound like the coolest thing ever?? Plus, the bride and groom were really excited about taking photos in the snow. Bonus!

Mammoth is a popular winter destination for Southern California- I have been visiting Mammoth for snowboarding ever since I was in high school and just love getting up there. It’s such an awesome ski resort and is always so much fun. Jannette and Scott are avid snowboarders, so it was fitting that they chose this place as the backdrop for their April Fool’s Day wedding – yes April Fool’s Day. :)

Though the day started with clear blue skies, a blizzardy, windy storm rolled in about an hour before the ceremony making the day slightly chaotic, but all-the-more special and memorable! Some people would have freaked about the conditions… ok, we all freaked just a tad… but they were able to move the ceremony inside, everyone witnessed Jannette & Scott exchange vows, and then we went outside and froze for some really awesome photos. :) In my mind, perfect.
A very special thank you to my friend Amelia Strauss for helping me out on this shoot! She brought great energy to the day and didn’t look at me like I was crazy for wanting to keep going back outside for more photos. :)

Amelia got this image of Jannette just after getting ready- I love it.

Jannette wore the cutest snow boots under her dress!

A few portraits of the bride before the ceremony (and before the blizzard).

Then I headed up to McCoy Station (a lodge halfway up the mountain) where I met up with Scott for some portraits. I love him for his willingness and eagerness to shoot in the snow! It didn’t phase him one bit.

A few images to set the scene…

Plan C for the ceremony setup was this room at McCoy Station with an awesome view of the mountain.

Then a few inside portraits of everyone…

Amelia snagged these of the wedding party while I was shooting Jannette and Scott. I love how they came together for this series. :)

Loved this industrial feel of the stairwell.

It was then time to head outside for some fun snow shots. Scott and his brother Gavin were the willing participants to go out there with me to do some test shots before I made everyone else come out into the freezing cold. You guys rock!

So, they didn’t love me for making them take this shot, but I think it was totally worth it. :) We were out there for about four minutes total, but my fingers were pretty much frozen solid when we were done. It’s an interesting task to try to depress the shutter button when you can’t feel it…

One reason why I appreciate Scott so much… zero hesitation.

After a quick break inside, we came back out a little later to take advantage of the sun breaking through the clouds. It almost looks warm, huh?

One of my favorites…

And finally, my favorite from a series we shot after sunset…

And, because it’s funny… This is what Amelia and I looked like while we were shooting some of the above shots. Fun, fun times!

Amelia, holding the veil while shooting in the blizzard.

Me, during the momentary burst of sun we had to work with. Don’t let the sun fool you…it was still just as cold.

Jannette and Scott- Thank you SO much for this experience. I can’t tell you how much fun I had with you, your friends and families. I hope you enjoy these photos and that they remind you that although the day was hectic and bit crazy, it was special, unique, and all yours. :)
