After shooting at Fort Point for Part 1 of Alicia & Jeremy’s engagement session, we all headed to the Sutro Baths Ruins which is an awesome outdoor location for shooting in San Francisco. Some of my favorite images from the whole session were shot here… and even though it was really cold Alicia and Jeremy were delightful and let me create such great images. I even had some time to experiment with some new ways of shooting and processed my black and whites a little bit differently to fit the mood of this location. As artists, it’s so important to try new things from time to time and this session let me do that.
Love both of these.
This is quite possibly my favorite image from the whole day!
Brian was floating around taking some photos as I was shooting and he must have caught this image right after I caught the one above. I came across it while editing and loved it! I love that he captured that expression on Alicia’s face as I was obviously checking out some settings on my own camera.
Congratulations, Alicia & Jeremy!! Thanks so much for a fun day!
Alicia and Jeremy are both from Pittsburgh but are now living in California. Though they are getting married in Pittsburgh in 2013, they wanted engagement photos here in Cali where they live and have lived for years now. After some time in the Palm Springs area, they have settled into a life in San Francisco, a city I love. So, a couple weekends ago Brian and I headed up the coast to meet up with them for a session in that glorious city. Side note- being from Ohio, this was Brian’s first time in San Francisco so it was really fun to get to show him things like Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge for the first time!
We did two locations for this session and because I loved so many, I decided to break up the session into two posts. This, Part 1, was shot at Fort Point. I have shot there before, but it’s such a cool location I didn’t mind. Plus, though it was bit windy and cold, we avoided the rain that the forecast said my happen, so we were happy!
Jeremy is an amazing metal worker and designer, so shooting underneath the Golden Gate Bridge seemed so appropriate for what he does and the kind of art and architecture they like.
They look so good together!
This was an experimental shot- and there’s something about it I just love so much. It has an apparition-like quality about it that makes me happy for something different.
Part 2 was shot at Sutro Baths Ruins and was such a cool shoot! I’ll be posting that in a few days!
It’s crazy to think that this year will mark my 6th year in a row of attending WPPI – the Wedding and Portrait Photographers International convention that goes off in Vegas at about this time every year. I remember when I first attended (with my mom! I was really kind of nervous and unsure of what to think about it. I came home totally overwhelmed by what this industry was all about and how many amazing photographers there are in the world. The next few years, I went always with the goal of meeting new people and learning something new- researching new gear, hearing new tips from the big wigs, finding out about new album companies… I actually just ran into the notebook I took to my second WPPI back in 2008 and was amazed to read all the notes I took that year. It was actually really fun going back through them to see just how far I’ve come and how much I know now that I didn’t know, or was completely new to me, then.
I now attend with a new mindset. I don’t go to soak in all the knowledge I possibly can like I did those first few years. I now go to connect with other photographers, see the people I’ve become friends with over the years and have real conversations about our businesses, our work, etc. These kinds of connections and conversations can help to motivate and inspire me in ways that a platform speaker just can’t and that motivation and inspiration is really what benefits me most now at this stage in my career. Having said that, I wouldn’t be in the place I am now without those platform speakers and tips and tricks I picked up along the way…
I say this every year, but if you’re a photographer and you’ve never been to WPPI– go. It’s educational and inspiring and really so much fun. And if you see me walking around, say hello! I’d love to meet you!
And because I am currently working on an edit, I thought I’d post a quick photo. This shot looks nothing like my usual work, and that’s why I love it. More from this San Francisco engagement session on Wednesday!
