Alison & Steve: Continued

April 4, 2008

Finally I’m getting a chance to post the rest of the images from Alison & Steve’s engagement shoot.

Hayley and I had a great time driving out to Solvang. We had both been there when we were very young on a weekend trip with our Mom and Grandparents, so we had some vague memories of that little town. If you have never been there, I really recommend going if you’re wanting a little get away to a quaint, cute little village. It’s a town themed around Danish architecture, food and merchandise with bakeries and candle shops sprinkled everywhere throughout the town — and it’s only about 30 min North of Santa Barbara.

They also have some great vineyards in the area, one of which is called Bridlewood which was the setting for Alison & Steve’s shoot. The people there were great and had no problem with us shooting in and around the grounds. Love that!

Alison and Steve are getting married this fall in Santa Barbara and I’m so excited to shoot a wedding in that area! Especially for this couple… they are so sweet and are really fun to photograph. Their comfort with and fondness of one another shines through whether I’m “directing” a shot or they are just hanging out being themselves.

Alison and I actually met through my good friend Hillary, and Alison booked me without us ever meeting. We were able to hang out and get to know each other a few weekends ago at Hillary’s birthday in Palm Desert. I liked her immediately and we had a great time celebrating together. I’m so looking forward to their wedding, but until then, here are the engagement photos…

A simple portrait.

I love how vibrant Alison’s eyes look in the photo.

Here’s a shot Hayley grabbed of me while in action.

This is pretty much my favorite shot of the day and it was taken by my lovely sister Hayley!  I processed it with a texture shot that I took myself while in Vegas at WPPI. I absolutely love what it adds to this shot.

Here’s a fun shot for a very willing couple. :)   Lay in the grass? Sure. No problem!

Love this one! I got in so close with my 28mm, and they weren’t even phased. They could totally act as if I wasn’t there…

A great last shot before leaving for the day.

Alison & Steve,

I had a great time with you guys! Hope you guys are enjoying Vegas!

As a present to Hayley for graduating college a couple weeks ago, we lingered around Solvang for a bit and then spent the night at a great hotel in Santa Barbara.  We took some time to get some fun shots of our mini vacation, which I’ll be posting soon.

Plus, I have a great wedding tomorrow!

Alison & Steve: Engagement Session in Solvang

April 2, 2008

On Sunday, I drove up to beautiful Solvang, CA (about 3o min north of Santa Barbara) for Alison & Steve’s Engagement Session. What a gorgeous area!  I was lucky enough to have my sister Hayley come along with me for the drive and to help out on the shoot.

We both got some great shots and I’m so excited to post them! This week is super crazy hectic so I haven’t had enough time to edit and process all of the images, but here’s one until I can get to the rest. :)

How gorgeous is this scenery?

More soon. Happy Wednesday, everyone!

Laura & Mike’s Wedding: Newport Beach

April 1, 2008

Wedding season is starting off with a bang!

As I posted the other day, I shot a really fun wedding with Kim Fox this weekend in Newport Beach. There were many interesting things about this wedding.

First and foremost, Laura and Mike were so sweet and welcoming. When second shooting, I don’t have the opportunity to get to know the couple before the wedding like I do with my own clients. I feel that it is so important to establish a trusting relationship with my clients in the months leading up to the wedding day so that on the day they feel totally comfortable with me, and vice versa. Though we didn’t have the opportunity to meet beforehand, Laura and Mike made me feel as though we already knew each other. They were so welcoming and fun to be around and I think that really showed through in the images I captured.

Second, Mike and Laura are both HUGE USC fans. Laura is actually an alum (as am I) and currently works in fundraising for school. During the reception, there was a big surprise for all the USC fans at the party. So much fun! (See photos below.) :)

Another interesting thing about this wedding was that Mike Colon was a guest! Perhaps only you wedding photographer types out there can appreciate how interesting this actually is, but Mike Colon is one of the top dogs in wedding photography around the nation, and certainly here in Southern California! It turns out that Laura was a camp counselor to Julie Colon, Mike’s wife, for many years. You can imagine how nervous I was right before the ceremony knowing that such a great, well-respected photographer was sitting in the audience! Thank goodness he was gracious enough to not bring along his camera… now that would have been really intimidating! I took a moment to talk to Mike and Julie during the reception and we ended up comiserating about how all of us became super sick after the whirlwind experience of WPPI. What great, nice people! Here’s a shot I grabbed of them.

Okay, enough storytelling. On to the photos!

I spent some time hanging out with Mike and his 11 groomsmen (Yes! 11! And I learned each of their names!) before the ceremony…

A great, simple portrait of the groom.

Here’s a shot I grabbed of Laura right before the ceremony as her veil was blowing in the wind.

A lovely detail of Laura’s bouquet with her Grandmother’s handkerchief. Florals by Red Orchid Design.

lm_005.jpg

A dreamy shot of the flower girl making her way up the aisle.

lm_006.jpg

One of the best things about photographing Laura was her great ability to express her emotions through her laugh and her smile. Here is one of those moments from the ceremony.

lm_007.jpg

Another great moment during the ceremony.

lm_008.jpg

After the ceremony, while Kim was taking family group photos, I took some time out with the kids. I absolutely love photographing children, especially at weddings. They bring a joy to the wedding day that is so fun to capture in photographs. Here’s the beautiful flower girl down by the harbor.

lm_009.jpg

I love this shot.

lm_010.jpg

Here’s a series of one of the most expressive little girls I have ever met. Her name is Amber and was such a delight the whole day. What a cutie.

Some more great details, all by Red Orchid Design.

The First Dance.

lm_014.jpg

An emotional and touching dance. Because Laura’s father has passed, Laura instead danced with her brother while a great slideshow of photos of their father played in the background. Needless to say there were very few dry eyes in the room.

lm_015.jpg

lm_016.jpg

Right after that emotional moment, a surprise entered the tent! Laura, with the help of the ladies of Red Orchid Design, arranged for the USC Marching Band to play at the reception! It was a total surprise to most everyone in the room, including the Groom!! As a USC alum, this was especially fun to photograph!

lm_017.jpg

The band was AWESOME! They were so entertaining to watch.

lm_018.jpg

All the Trojan alumni were pretty excited… and there were many in attendance! The band even played the favorite “UCLA Sucks!” especially for Laura’s brother-in-law who used to play for the Bruins. He was a really good sport. Trojan Pride!

Congratulations, Laura and Mike! All the best!
