AWESOME Engagement Shoot: Coming Soon!

April 21, 2008

Today was a truly amazing day that was nearly half spent shooting an awesome engagement shoot with Amber and Nathan. I had SO much fun today with them and I can’t wait to share the MANY outstanding images I captured of these two. We had an awesome location (more on that when the post is made) and two super fun people willing to do anything for a good laugh and a good photograph. :)

Seriously, I have so many images I want to post of this session, it may take a week to get them all up here! Until I can find the time to prepare all of those files (It does take a bit of time, people!), here are two fun shots of our day…

May & Shawn: Engaged!

April 20, 2008

May and Shawn are simply delightful. Shawn himself is a photographer and when we first spoke on the phone we bonded over that fact, chatting away about different equipment and shooting techniques. So, on my way to the shoot I felt myself getting nervous. It’s always a bit intimidating to photograph photographers… but when I arrived at the shoot, May and Shawn were so sweet and relaxed that my nerves calmed and I was ready to create some great images.

We met at Pasadena City Hall, a beautiful site with great architecture and lovely grounds. May and I both were reminded of Europe as we walked around the place — all of the arches and ornate stone accents along with the park-like courtyard at the center of the building really did take me back to my time spent in Europe a few years ago.

Here are my favorite shots from the session yesterday.

I just loved this space.

Love this one.

May and Shawn are so great together. It’s hard for her not to smile around him.

A cute reaction to a guy crossing the street. :-P

After we got quite a few shots at the City Hall, we walked around the neighborhood a bit and found this great space behind some of the business buildings across the street.

My favorite part about this space was the fact that it had these bright, colorful tiled walls lining the lawn area. Anytime I find colorful walls, I must photograph them. Thanks to May and Shawn for being so willing to fulfill my crazy visions!

May and Shawn, I’m really looking forward to your wedding in July! Good luck with all of the final details!

I will be posting a slideshow of this shoot soon. Have a good Sunday, everyone!

Engagement Session: Coming Soon!

April 19, 2008

Today I shot a great engagement session with the lovely May & Shawn in downtown Pasadena. What a great place to shoot! I have many that I already love from this session after only about 15 minutes of editing! I’m so excited to go through all of the shots. Until then, here is one that struck me right away…

This will be Engagement Post Week as I also have  a great e-session on Monday that I am so excited about!

Delayed Post: Solvang with Hayley

April 17, 2008

A few weeks ago, my sister and I drove up to Solvang to shoot Alison & Steve’s engagement session, which I blogged about here.

Since we were up there anyway, Hayley and I decided stick around Solvang for a while after the shoot.  We walked around the quaint little town, went to a couple bakeries to find just the right treats to bring back to our parents. Then we stopped by a great wine bar called the Wandering Dog, which Alison had told me about earlier in the day. What a great little place. The people there were so nice and there was actually a dog wandering around the place. After a quick glass of wine and a little chatting with some of the people there (two of whom were on their honeymoon!) we set out for a little more exploration around town and made some time for portraits in the great late afternoon light.

Here are some of the photos we took on our mini trip…

This what happens when you give Hayley a camera on a nearly 3 hour drive… I think this photo is actually really interesting. Hayley is just getting better and better. :)

Evidence that we were in Solvang. I just love the character that this town has. Yes, even you can lease your own windmill…

I feel bad because I don’t remember the dog’s name, but here is the resident dog– he got distracted as I went to take a photo of him.

… but I kept trying and finally got this winner. What a cute dog! Speaking of dogs, I just got a new dog and I’m totally in love with him. I’ll be dedicating a post to him in the next couple days.

I’m so lucky that I have a gorgeous sister who is always (well… almost always) willing to model for me when I can’t resist the urge to capture some good light. She’s great on both sides of the camera… Speaking of that, Hayley has been going with me to a couple shoots lately when I need help in a pinch. As most of my friends and family know, my nickname for her is ‘Monkey’  — it’s a nickname that evolved many years ago and it has stuck to this day. I could go into the story of why I call her Monkey, but it’s really not an interesting story and is more work to explain than its worth! Sometimes I catch myself calling her Monkey in front of clients while we’re on a shoot…. and I realize this may seem like a weird nickname for those of you who are not used to it. For me, it’s so ordinary and second-nature that I find it difficult to break the habit in front of other people… so if you hear me call out to ‘Monkey’ to move a light on my shoot with you, you’ll know I’m just talking to Hayley. :)

What a great trip! I love that whole area up around Santa Barbara and look forward to shooting Alison and Steve’s wedding up there this fall!

Laurel

April 16, 2008

Laurel is a dear friend of mine and an incredibly talented artist. Not only is she a designer for Disney (Hel-lo!), she is a brilliant illustrator with a great style. [Check out her art Web site here.] Stepping into her Los Angeles area apartment, one is served a visual feast — everything from her collection of unique, at-times-creepy toys and dolls, to the textured walls and newly-decoupaged coffee table (Yes! Decoupage! She’s bringin’ it back and it’s totally fabulous…) — everything in this apartment screams creative, artistic, and unique– oh, and a particular obsession with Audrey Hepburn and old films.

This weekend, Laurel had a little get together at her place. Before the other guests arrived, we decided to do an impromptu portrait session in and around her aparment. I had a lot of fun in those 7 minutes of shooting, and got the most amazing shots that I’ve ever been able to take in such a short amount of time. I’m looking forward to doing another shoot with her where I can showcase her one-of-a-kind living space, until then, here’s the fabulous Laurel!

This whole shoot was inspired by the way this floor lamp was lighting up Laurel’s face while we were talking in her living room before any of the other guests had arrived. I saw the light, grabbed my camera (which I try to bring with me most places) and started shooting. Laurel, thanks so much for being so willing to fulfill my crazy photographic visions!

Classic.

Then we moved out onto her stairway where the light was really soft and great.

Love this series. So very Laurel– equal parts glamour, class and silliness.

Love this shot! I took my post-processing a step beyond where I usually go and added many more layers to this image just as an experiment. I love using texture, but I usually don’t use it this heavily. I love how this image turned out as a result of ultimate freedom.

Thanks for modeling, Laurel!
